Verdict
Retell is the developer pick because it gives engineering teams the primitives to build exactly the receptionist they want, on a published component price list. Verified September 7, 2026: no monthly fee, $0.055 a minute for voice infrastructure plus your choice of LLM ($0.003 to $0.16), text-to-speech ($0.015 to $0.04) and telephony ($0.015), for an all-in range of $0.07 to $0.31 a minute, with $10 in free credits, phone numbers at $2 a month and 20 concurrent calls free. It is not a product a business owner buys and switches on.
This is an Editorial Preview. We have not published a numeric rating for Retell AI because our structured testing is not complete. Facts below are sourced and dated; anything unverified is labeled.
Strengths
- No monthly platform fee; pay only for minutes used
- Published component rates and an all-in range
- 20 concurrent calls and 10 knowledge bases included free
Limitations
- Not a finished receptionist — engineering required
- Effective rate varies four-fold with model and voice choices
- Ongoing maintenance burden
- No human backup
Who Retell is for
Product teams, agencies and software companies embedding voice into their own products. A plumbing company should not buy Retell directly; a company building software for plumbers might.
What we verified
We checked retellai.com/pricing on September 7, 2026. Retell is pay-as-you-go with no monthly platform fee. Voice infrastructure costs $0.055 a minute; on top of that you pay for a language model ($0.003 to $0.16 a minute depending on the model), text-to-speech ($0.015 to $0.04) and telephony ($0.015, varying by country), which the page sums to $0.07 to $0.31 a minute for a complete agent. Optional add-ons include a knowledge base at $0.005 a minute, denoising at $0.005 and PII removal at $0.01. Phone numbers are $2 a month each. Twenty concurrent calls and ten knowledge bases are free; additional concurrency is $8 a month per call and additional knowledge bases $8 a month each. New accounts get $10 in free credits, and an Enterprise plan offers custom volume pricing with no concurrency cap.
Strengths
- Full control over conversation design.
- No monthly fee; published component rates and an all-in range.
- 20 concurrent calls and 10 knowledge bases included free.
- Recording, transcripts and outbound calling (not independently verified).
Limitations
- Engineering required to build and maintain.
- Scheduling and CRM require custom integration.
- Effective rate varies more than four-fold with model and voice choices.
- No human backup.
How we evaluated it
We reviewed Retell's pricing page, checked September 7, 2026, and the positioning captured in our provider database, and evaluated it as what it is: infrastructure for teams building their own voice agent. Retell has not been through the 10-call challenge. When it is tested, the lab will build a reference receptionist on the platform and document the configuration, so the score reflects what the engine can do rather than the skill of whoever built it.
What the product is designed to do
Retell positions itself as a developer platform: it supplies the conversation engine, telephony and APIs, and leaves receptionist behavior to your engineers or an agency. Call recording, transcripts, outbound calling and multi-language support are listed in its materials. Appointment scheduling and CRM connections are marked partial because they require custom function integration rather than a switch. There is no human backup and no industry specialization, by design. The buyer is a team that wants to own the caller's experience end to end and is comfortable choosing a model and a voice from a price list.
Setup and day-to-day operation
For a developer platform, setup is a software project. Someone must design the agent's prompts and behavior, implement the functions it calls for booking and lookups, connect a phone number, handle transfers and build whatever reporting the business will use to review calls. Day-to-day operation includes monitoring, updating prompts as edge cases surface, managing telephony and watching how model, voice and carrier choices combine into a per-minute cost. At the low end of the published range, 1,000 minutes costs about $70; at the high end, about $310. A business owner without an engineering partner should not expect to run this alone.
Where it fits in our ranking
Retell is eighth and the first of the two pure developer platforms. It sits below Synthflow because Synthflow's enterprise contracts include implementation and an SLA, though Retell is far cheaper to start with, and above Vapi because we read Retell as the more opinionated build path with a clearer all-in price, which for a team that wants a receptionist rather than a research project is an advantage. Both judgments are provisional until the lab has built on each platform. See Retell vs Vapi for the head-to-head and Synthflow vs Retell for the vendor-built-versus-self-built decision.
Which businesses should shortlist it
Software companies adding voice to a product, agencies serving several clients, and larger operators with in-house developers. A vertical software vendor serving auto repair shops or HVAC companies is a good example; an individual shop in either trade should pick a packaged product from higher in the ranking.
What would change our view
- Lab results from a documented reference build, particularly on latency, interruption handling and the transfer scenario.
- Evidence of how much engineering a minimal receptionist actually requires, measured during the reference build.
- A confirmed integration catalog, which affects how much custom code a booking workflow needs.
- A measured per-minute cost for the reference build, placed within the published $0.07 to $0.31 range.

Frequently asked questions
Is Retell an AI receptionist?
It is a platform for building one. Compare it as a platform, not a turnkey product.
Retell or Vapi?
Both are developer platforms; the differences are in tooling, pricing components and ecosystem. See our Retell vs Vapi comparison.
What does Retell cost?
Verified September 7, 2026: no monthly fee; $0.055 a minute for voice infrastructure plus LLM, text-to-speech and telephony, for an all-in range of $0.07 to $0.31 a minute. Numbers are $2 a month, concurrency beyond 20 is $8 a month each, and new accounts get $10 in credits.
Can an agency build me a receptionist on Retell?
That is a common use of the platform. Ask the agency who maintains the agent after launch, what a change will cost you and which point in the $0.07 to $0.31 range their configuration lands at.
Has Retell been lab tested?
No. Its test-lab page shows sample data until a reference build is recorded through the 10-call challenge.
